Background
Based in the United Kingdom and established in 1993, Allen & York provide cross sector, high quality personnel to national and international organisations at all levels.
The company act as both an employment agency and an employment business.
Responsible business objectives
To manage emissions by developing a carbon reduction plan with SMART targets in order to minimise impact, whilst also raising the awareness of staff about climate change and empowering them to take action.
How they do it
- Managing Emissions: Allen & York met with their office landlords who were able to supply them with a breakdown of their company's electricity & gas usage and expenditure. They also invited Envirowise to conduct a thorough Environmental Audit which they received on 4th Jan 2008. This included an examination of energy consumption and recommendations on how to reduce it. Further, they are in the process of implementing some of Envirowise's recommendations, for example:
- Turning off PCs, Printers, Fax Machines at night;
- Turning off all lights and heaters at night;
- Heating: lobbying their landlords to install more controls for their heating system, to enable them to turn the heating off when not required.
- Lighting: asking their landlords to remove 2 striplights from selected banks of 4, to reduce the amount of overlit areas.
In 2007, Allen & York offset employees car travel emissions (to and from work and client visits) with Climate Care. They will do this again for 2008.
What impact it has
Business Benefits
Allen & York have started looking at reductions in emissions since receiving the Envirowise audit on 4th Jan 2008, so as yet haven't made substantial reductions. However, all concerned feel positive about the long term benefits that will be felt by the business.
