Background

Development began in September 1993 and the building project was officially launched on 29 September 1993. The first part of the development to be completed was The Water's Edge - a canalside scheme of shops, restaurants and bars which was officially opened in November 1994.

Responsible business objectives

  • Integrating a low carbon strategy into companies;
  • Measuring emissions;
  • Developing a carbon reduction plan with SMART targets to minimise impact;
  • Committing adequate resources and budget to tackle climate change;
  • Raising awareness of staff about climate change and empowering them to take action;
  • Identifying a board level champion (through the task champions in the Sustainability Forum);
  • Encouraging suppliers to measure and minimise their own carbon footprint;
  • Working collaboratively with suppliers to minimise the carbon footprint along the supply chain.

How they do it

  • Participation in Birmingham Sustainability initiatives including the Be Birmingham Climate Change workshops;
  • Creation of the Brindleyplace Sustainability Forum to share ideas and encourage behavioural change;
  • Publicity through the Brindleyplace Newsletter and website concerning various initiatives as they are identified and implemented;
  • Participation in the Climate Change Festival.

What impact it has

The tenants of Brindleyplace, through the Sustainability Forum, have agreed to work together to reduce carbon emissions and adopt a positive approach to sustainability across the development. Working in Partnership with Be Birmingham, Brindley Place are embracing their tenants' targets for the City, whilst sharing best practice and initiatives amongst the Forum. Through the targets and action plans formulated, it is their aim to become the most sustainable development in the City.
