Summary

Dataserv Ltd provide their clients with a fully comprehensive IT asset recovery and recycling service for their redundant IT assets - this includes data wiping of all hard disks, full asset reporting, remarketing of any resaleable goods and recycling of all other items in accordance with WEEE legislation.

Background

Dataserv has over 30 years experience and now have over 100 software, hardware, resale and materials processing experts. Dataserv is headquartered in Staines, UK and Herten, Germany. They have a growing number of regional European offices, as well as collection, audit and processing centres across Europe.

Responsible business objectives

  • Raising the awareness of staff about climate change and empowering them to take action;
  • Identifying a Board-level champion.

How they do it

Dataserv are ISO 14001 accredited and as such are audited on a quarterly basis. They also have an environmental policy which staff adhere to.

  • Recycling different waste products (paper/plastics/food);
  • Turning off all electronic devices when not in use;
  • Car sharing is promoted as is using public transports/bicycles.

In addition to this, Dataserv have sponsored a final year mechanical engineering student specialising in environmental issues from Imperial College London to perform an audit on their building to see how they can further reduce their Co2 footprint and become more environmentally economic. One project that has been identified so far is to collect rainwater from roof footprint and feed it into store tanks for flushing the lavatories. Also, more of their correspondence is now being sent electronically.

What impact it has

Dataserv strive to use the most efficient ethical business practice throughout the group. They use the most ethical methodologies for tear down of redundant computer equipment and can provide their WEEE target evidence showing that less than 0.4 of one percent went to landfill in the last 6 months. Their downstream 2nd tier partners are also audited and these details can be supplied - at present no risks have been identified with these partners.

Business Benefits

Reduction in energy usage reduces energy bills. Car sharing/staff using pubic transport is financially incentivised. Sending correspondence electronically saves both postage & stationary costs.
