Sector:  Media & Entertainment
No. of Employees: 0-14
Region: South West

Summary
Nameless are a full service web agency multi-talented in all aspects of digital media. They're digital craftsmen and women, and have designed and hand built many award winning websites for a diverse range of organisations - both public, private and in the charity sector.

Background

Established in Bristol in 1999, Nameless has grown completely organically to become one of the top three interactive media companies in the South West.

Responsible business objectives

  • Integrating a low carbon strategy into the company's business model;

  • Raising the awareness of staff about climate change and empowering them to take action;

  • Providing information to customers about the carbon footprint of their products and services;

  • Raising customer awareness about the actions they can take to reduce the carbon emissions resulting from the use of products and services.

How they do it

As responsible and ethical corporate citizens, Nameless aim to go beyond becoming a zero emission company in the hope that their actions can also help to negate some of the emissions of the community around them. Nameless recognise that they're just one link in many supply chains, but are committed to doing their bit alongside many millions of other responsible businesses.

They tactically attract ethical and like-minded clients, so their supply chain is as positive as possible - although they do not turn their back on any opportunity to educate and inform those who are not committed to the challenges being faced by Climate Change.

Nameless are also in the process of trying to engage with their neighbouring businesses on Broad Street to make their street an eco/green one.

They continue to raise awareness amongst their peers at work and through the people they encounter with the aim of supporting and empowering their decisions to become more conscientious regarding environmental issues.

Some of Nameless's efforts can be summarised thus:

  • Printing on both sides of the paper where possible and switching to recycled paper for their proposals;

  • Turning their machines and monitors off rather than leaving them on standby overnight;

  • Using more energy efficient lighting and switching to the EDF green energy tariff;

  • Minimising their use of air-conditioning;

  • Locating themselves centrally so that staff can walk or cycle to work;
  • Using public transport where appropriate;
  • Buying locally as much as possible;
  • Purchasing energy-efficient hardware and equipment, and continuing with their upgrade policy on existing equipment;
  • Invoicing electronically as much as possible;
  • Recycling the waste that they produce where possible - including old data (datarecycling.org);
  • Improving the insulations of their office during its renovation.

What impact it has

Apart from the obvious environmental and financial impacts, Nameless feel that it is difficult to work out impact in other areas - carbon emissions for example - as businesses have such huge variables. They are considering using consultancy to help with this!

Business Benefits

  • Reduced travel costs;
  • New market opportunities as a green portfolio attracts others who would prefer to work with a company that already cares about these issues and is doing their bit, than one that isn't;
  • A broader social networking field has opened up, again connecting with very interesting companies and people who are engaging in this area... it fosters the feeling of belonging to a really positive club.
