GENERAL INFORMATION
The North East region comprises the area from the Scottish border to Teesside, and includes the counties of Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley.
The region has fewer businesses than the national average and still lags behind most other regions in terms of its economic output per head. The dominant sectors of the regional economy are manufacturing, business services and the public sector, with a higher proportion of people working in the public sector than the national average.
The UK's highest proportion of workless households can be found in the region, along with areas of significant deprivation. However, the region is also home to some of the UK’s leading companies including Sage UK and Greggs.
