Noel Chadwick Ltd.

Sector:  Food Processing and Retail
No.of Employees:  55
Region: North West

Summary
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, John Chadwick expanded his nationally acclaimed family butchers shop and in August 2000 officially opened "The Chadwick Family's Emporium of Fine Food".  Specialising in local sourcing of produce and establishing itself as a good neighbour in the local community The Emporium successfully competes in a highly challenging supermarket dominated marketplace.

Background
Following a massive redevelopment programme in 1999, Chadwick's staff has increased from 17 members to 55.  Marketing itself as a "farm-to-fork food retailer" it slaughters, prepares and sells locally sourced meat via its on-site abattoir, food hall, and fully licensed restaurant.

  • Local Sourcing All the beef and lamb is slaughtered in their own EC approved, on-site abattoir. Also, they run - on a voluntary basis - the Small Abattoir Federation (SAFe) which provides support and guidance for other businesses that operate their own low-throughput abattoirs. In the shop a large meat counter provides a huge range of freshly made sausages, bacon and pork, chicken, lamb, and beef. The shop also has a delicatessen which offers a wide range of local cheeses, salads, pies, breads, and cakes.
  • Community Links. Since 2001, Chadwick has employed two young men from Lisieux Hall, a local centre that helps people with learning difficulties to lead a normal life. Chadwick actively supports the local community by donating food and financial assistance to several small charities and local events.  In particular, Chadwick donates food to the Little Sisters of the Poor, a nunnery based in Preston, and 'Lifeshare', a charity that helps the homeless. In addition it donates food and sponsors prizes for other local charities.

Business Benefits
Sales turnover has increased by over 300% to £2.25m since 1999.

Its strong local links also mean that it is very close to its customers and has the ability to quickly respond to their changing needs and demands.  As a result a new product line of ready meals and cooked pies has recently been introduced.

The business has received a huge amount of publicity from its success particularly since being awarded the Federation of Small Businesses' "Small Business Champions Award" in 2004.

This company is currently working towards achieving CommunityMark.
