Frequently Asked Questions...

Isn't corporate responsibility something that only really big corporates and multi-nationals do?

Not at all, big companies do it because it makes sound business sense, not just for PR reasons. Check out the case studies to see the benefits that many small companies have gained through managing their envionmental impacts, community relations, workforce needs and supply chains.

As a small company we don't have time to bother with the luxury of managing responsible business practice or sustainability, we've got a company to run.

You can save money and make your company more effective if you take some simple steps to reduce waste, manage water use, reduce staff turnover and more. You will also be more likely to win contracts from the public sector and other sectors which are increasingly asking their suppliers to disclose their policies and performance on the environment or society.

What is sustainability or sustainable development?

A widely-used and accepted international definition of sustainable development is: 'development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs' - Globally we are not even meeting the needs of the present let alone considering the needs of future generations.

What exactly does responsible business practice include?

That depends on the type of business you're running. It means treating your workforce fairly and responsibly; being innovative and listening to your customers needs; responsible use of environmental resources; reduction of waste, water and energy use; using less resources; being a good neighbour and getting involved in your community among other things.

We are already doing lots of this how can we manage it better?

Speak to an advisor to ensure you maximise the benefits of what you are doing. There are tools and standards you may wish to consider to manage and gain recognition for your projects.

What recognition can we get for acting responsibly?

There are a range of awards and standards associated with responsible business practice which validate your performance and provide publicity and networking opportunities. Awards and standards are listed on this website.

How much is all this going to cost us?

Generally it should not cost much, but in the longer term should save you money, or win you more contracts.
