What is the definition of a small and medium sized enterprise?
The European Commission provides the following definitions:

  • micro enterprise as those businesses with less than 10 employees and a turnover of less than 2m euro,
  • small enterprise as those businesses with less than 50 employees and a turnover of less than 10 euro
  • medium sized enterprise as those businesses with less than 250 employees and a turnover of less than 50m euro

How many small and medium sized enterprises are there in the UK?
There are an estimated 3.8 million businesses in the UK at the start of 2002 and 99.1 percent of them were small businesses.  Of the 3.8 million enterprises only 27,000 were medium sized enterprises and 7,000 of them were large.

The Small Business Consortium was formed in 2002 with the aim of raising the profitability of small and medium sized businesses in the UK by encouraging, developing and supporting social, environmental and community best practice in business.   More information about the Small Business Consortium and our members.

What is corporate social responsibility?
There is no single definition of corporate social responsibility (CSR), which is also called responsible business practice, corporate responsibility, or good works.  Business in the Community provides a basic introduction to CSR on their website.

If my company wants to get involved with CSR where do I start?
